Topped by green domes, the white Lutheran Helsinki Cathedral (Tuomiokirkko) in the city centre is visible across the city. It was completed in 1852 after two decades and, like the Senate Square it overlooks, was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel.

Its name in Finnish, Tuomiokirkko, translates as the Church of St Nicholas. It is Helsinki's most prominent landmark and Finland's most important Lutheran building. Inside, white walls and stark simplicity reign and the great domed ceiling provides good acoustics for concerts
