Renzo Piano to design Selfridges extension
Renzo Piano is tipped to design an extension to Selfridge’s department store in central London.
The Shard architect beat off competition from OMA and Herzog & de Meuron to win the project, which replaces an earlier scheme by Foster & Partners.
BD’s sister title Building reports the design will include a hotel, retail and office space.
It is expected the scheme will cost less than Foster’s ￡300 million proposal, which was shelved in 2004 when new Selfridges owner, Canadian billionaire Galen Weston, withdrew the planning application.
