Alsop opens offices in China and Canada
Will Alsop’s London-based architecture practice All Design has opened offices in China and Canada, cementing Alsop’s stated intention to seek the majority of his work outside the UK. All Design, which Alsop established with former RMJM colleague Scott Lawrie in September this year, now has a presence in Canada’s largest city Toronto and Chongqing in south-west China, the country’s fastest-growing city. Alsop has previously said that he expects 75% of the practice’s work to come from overseas. Toronto and Chongqing are logical locations for the practice’s expansion. Alsop has considerable experience in both cities and significant projects already underway. Will Alsop at RMJM, the architect’s eponymously named division of the Edinburgh-based practice, completed its design for a £100 million subway and bus station for the Toronto Transit Commission earlier this year, due to be completed in 2015. Alsop also designed the Sharp Centre for Design which opened in the city in 2004. In Chongqing, the architect has worked on a major masterplanning project, started while at RMJM, which included plans for a World Twin Towers Complex. When Alsop announced his departure from RMJM in August, taking around 15 colleagues with him, he indicated he would continue to work with the practice. "All Design has a number of projects under development in the Far East, Europe and the UK,"he said. "At the same time All Design will be working in partnership with RMJM to carry through a number of ongoing projects in London, China and Canada."
