Giulio Malgara has withdrawn his candidacy for the job of director of the Venice Biennale.

Italian press reports say that Malgara, who was nominated for the post by former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, asked Italy’s culture minister not to ratify his appointment.

Paolo Barrata, the most recent director of the biennale, has expressed his readiness to continue in the job.
