Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands has been appointed to design a second campus for University College London (UCL) in the capital.

UCL and the London Borough of Newham have agreed to spend six months working on proposals for the Carpenters Estate, east of the Olympic Park.

Plans will be drawn up for teaching and research facilities alongside residential and commercial uses. The campus will be developed in addition to the university’s existing campus in Bloomsbury.

Alex Lifschutz, director of Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, said: “The new campus will be a vital complement to the Bloomsbury Estate. This is an exciting time for Stratford and we believe the new UCL Campus will enhance an already significant part of London.’’

Proposals will be considered by the mayor of Newham and the council’s cabinet in mid-2012. There is no obligation from either Newham Council or the university to proceed with the plans after this date.

Newham mayor Robin Wales said: “With leading educational institutions already firmly established in the area, another university would inspire Newham youngsters to look at the wider opportunities available to them.

“As well as presenting employment opportunities, a new campus will provide a significant boost to the local economy and provide a lasting legacy for the community.”
