New life for Berman Guedes Stretton’s Oxford rare books archive
Corpus Christi College in Oxford has revived plans to extend its 16th century library. Berman Guedes Stretton won the job following an invited competition organised by the college in 2009, beating Wright & Wright, Huw Owen and Freeland Rees Roberts Architects. The design centres on a triple-height secure glass display of books, sitting in front of a stone-clad secure vault. Alan Berman said: “The new secure book stacks have ceiling heights of only 2.1m: by squeezing in an additional floor, Berman Guedes Stretton’s design offered the bonus of six student rooms in the roof and regaining the use of a 17th century beamed seminar room, now full of rolling stacks.” Detailed design development and submission of listed building application will be during 2012, with work on site due to start in in 2013. |
