Foster & Partners and Rogers Stirk Harbour have failed to make the final cut for a A$100 million (£65 million) redevelopment of the main cruise ship terminal in Sydney.

Instead, Australian practices Woods Bagot, which plans to carry out some of the work from its London office if it won, Hassell and APP will all make their presentations to client Sydney Ports Corporation next week.

The terminal at the city’s Circular Quay, which is also used by the city’s local ferry network, needs to be revamped because 150 cruise ships are now mooring there every year. Ten years ago the complex, which sits between the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, was taking just 60 passenger ships.

In all, 33 local and international firms expressed interest in the project over the summer before the number was whittled down to a final shortlist of six in the autumn.

A winner is due to be picked before Christmas and the enlarged terminal will be able to take a new generation of ships which carry up to 2,500 passengers. Work is expected to take around five years to complete.

Also missing out was Sydney firm Tonkin Zulaikha Greer which oversaw renovation of the terminal back in 1988 ahead of the city’s stint as host of the 2000 Olympic Games.
