BIG to design Finland ski village
BIG has been appointed to design the proposed 47,000 sq m Koutalaki Ski Village in Levi, Finland, by developer Kassiopeia Finland Oy. The ski village will replace an existing ski centre in Levi, which is in Finnish Lapland and is the largest ski resort in the country. The Danish firm has proposed four buildings radiating from a central square, with access to curved roofs allowing visitors to ski away from the resort via the rooftops. The buildings also provide shelter for the square which will contain cafés and bars and host ice skating and music events. A rooftop restaurant will provide 360-degree views of the resort. Bjarke Ingels, founder & partner at BIG, said: ”The Koutalaki Ski Village is conceived as an extension of both the summit and the resort. The architecture extends the organic forms of natural landscape, creating an inhabitable as well as skiable man-made mountain. “Our design for the Koutalaki Ski Village creates a new hybrid integrating distinct identities such as village and resort, shelter and openness, cosy intimacy and natural majesty, unique character and careful continuity – or simply - architecture and landscape.” |
