Make Architects and Erect Architecture have been appointed to design two separate public spaces at the Olympic Park.

Erect has been chosen to design a visitor centre and playground in the north park. Make will form part of a team led by US-landscape architect James Corner Field Operations to design a 20ha plaza in the south park.

The winning south park concept features a tree-lined promenade which connects flexible spaces for events, food stalls and other attractions, recreating the atmosphere of London’s South Bank.

James Corner Field Operation’s bid beat competition from Agence Ter, Gustafson Porter, Ken Smith Landscape Architect and West 8 in a competition organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants.

Erect’s plans for the north park involve creating a community centre integrated into the parkland and river valley with a playground themed on its surroundings with trees to climb.

The bid was selected from a shortlist of five which also featured Cottrell & Vermeulen, David Kohn Architects, The Landscape Partnership and Ushida Findlay Associates.

Andrew Altman, chief executive of the Olympic Park Legacy Company, said: “We were impressed by the creativity of all the design concepts, but James Corner Field Operations and Erect Architecture really captured the character of the park as a compelling destination.”
