Fifty Europan competitions - but no British winners
Young architects from Zaha Hadid, Studio Weave and Macreanor Lavington are among those honoured in this year’s Europan competition. But no British architects won any of the 49 competitions in 17 countries that make up the contest of ideas on urbanism and architecture. Architects aged under 40 are invited to form teams and compete for particular sites identified by municipalities, local authorities and clients across the continent. The winners go on to build their projects. Winners also receive Euro 12,000. Runners-up receive Euro 6,000. The judges can also award honourable mentions. There were 1,826 project submissions for this year’s competition whose theme was “Resonances between territories and ways of life – what architectures for sustainable cities?” Maria Smith of Studio Weave, which earnt an honourable mention for its entry, said: “Europan is a great opportunity for young architects because we get a chance to show what we can do at a larger scale than usual.” The practice pitched for a site in the Dutch new town of Almere whose brief required a temporary pavilion to showcase a new woodland development. Studio Weave’s solution was a structure that could eventually be turned upside down and moved into the woods to become one of the new homes. Laura Bradley and Isabella Percy, who work at Macreanor Lavington, and Sarah Robinson, from Panter Hudspith, also got an honourable mention for their scheme to breathe new life into a former electricity plant on the fringe of Hungary’s third city.
