Artists Ackroyd and Harvey have received planning permission for a commission integrating trees and giant metal rings to mark the entrance of the Olympic Park.

The artwork will see the planting of ten large trees, each supporting a metal ring engineered either of phosphored bronze or stainless steel.

Each ring will be six metres in diameter and engraved with text relating to the history of the location. The final tree, an English oak, will have inscriptions of local residents’ memories of the area.

Three trees, including a red oak and a silver lime, will be planted in time for the 2012 Olympic Games. The remaining seven will be planted in legacy.

Olympic Delivery Authority chairman John Armitt said: “These 10 trees will become a strong symbol of the games and reinforce a commitment to the creation of Britain’s largest urban park for over a century. They will act as fantastic meeting points for both spectators next summer and visitors for generations to come.”
