RIBA London has announced details of a competition to design public benches for the Royal Docks in east London.

Architecture students, recent graduates and fledgling practices have until the end of next month to submit designs for the competition which is also being run by London’s Pleasure Gardens.

The benches will go on display at a Pleasure Garden being earmarked for the Royal Docks.

Called Pews & Perches, up to 50 bench designs will be awarded a grant allowing them to be built and will be installed at the site for up to two years from next June.

RIBA London director Tamsie Thomson said: “During the Olympics, the London Pleasure Gardens will welcome tens of thousands of people on their way to the Olympic site. This is a huge opportunity to get noticed.”

RIBA is hoping architects will be inspired by Studio Weave’s design for the country’s longest bench at Littlehampton, West Sussex, which it has used on a flyer promoting the competition.
