Foster Wilson completes Yaa Centre in Notting Hill
The Yaa Centre’s facilities include workshops for making costumes and floats for Notting Hill carnival, a steel pan rehearsal room, offices, cafe and a performance space. A 19th century mews building has been extended to house the centre and soundproofed to avoid disturbing neighbours. The centre is surrounded by other properties on three sides so uses rooflights to allow natural light into the building. Steel panels have been used to clad the main elevation. The interior features concrete floors, exposed steelwork and exposed brickwork from the original building. Tim Foster, partner at Foster Wilson Architects, said: “It has taken over 10 years to bring this unique project to fruition and we believe it creates a new model for the housing of the carnival arts.” The project was funded by the Arts Council Lottery Fund. |
