Young professionals from Zaha Hadid, Studio Weave and Panter Hudspith were also successful. Europan is open to architects under the age of 40 who are invited to enter competitions for a number of projects on sites across Europe. Europan11 featured 49 competitions in 17 countries run in collaboration with local authorities. Winners, who may go on to build their projects, receive €12,000. Runners-up receive €6,000. The judges can also award honourable mentions. This year’s theme was: “Resonances between territories and ways of life – what architectures for sustainable cities?” Ken Thompson, whose proposal for a 1960s apartment block in a Dutch new town won a first prize, entered with his Maccreanor Lavington colleagues Andrew Kitching and David Morison as well as Elena Chevtchenko of Dutch practice Maxwan. He said: “It’s the fourth time I’ve entered Europan and the first time I’ve won. It’s a great feeling.
