OMA breaks ground on Taipei Performing Arts Centre
The ground-breaking ceremony for OMA’s Taipei Performing Arts Centre has taken place, attended by Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten, the partners in charge of the project, along with the president of Taiwan. The design involves three theatres positioned around an elevated glass cube containing shared back-stage facilities. One of the auditoriums is spherical and two can be combined into a “super theatre” with a 60m-long stage for experimental performances. Koolhaas said: “The flexible configurations of the theatres allow unimagined scenarios, incessantly stimulating theatrical experiments.” OMA won the competition three years ago after beating 135 entries from 24 countries. It was originally due to be completed next year but is now slated for 2015. |
