Hugh Broughton Architects has won a ￡5 million competition to design a new gallery for the Welbeck Estate’s Portland Collection.

Caruso St John and Tony Fretton Architects were also in the running for the project, which will be built inside the garden walls beside the existing Harley Gallery in Nottinghamshire.

The brief sought a new gallery and a clearer entrance sequence.

Gallery director Lisa Gee said Broughton was appointed after a “tightly fought” competition.

She added: “We’re very excited by this opportunity to share more of the historic Portland Collections from Welbeck with the public. It’s a delight to be working with Hugh in developing an inspiring building and we greatly look forward to starting the build.”

The gallery will display artefacts and other historic items relating to the earls and dukes of Portland.

The invited competition was managed by Malcolm Reading Consultants.

Welbeck’s history
Hugh Broughton’s intervention will be merely the latest in nearly 900 years of change on the Welbeck Estate.

Founded in 1140, the abbey became a Cavalier residence after the dissolution of the monasteries and an MoD college after the second world war.

In the 19th century a mysterious network of tunnels was added. Its became an art gallery 30 years ago and now boasts artists’ studios and a café.
