S333 and Bergen practice 3RW Arkitekter have unveiled plans to create 6,000 homes in 21st century hill towns on the outskirts of Oslo (pictured). The 390ha site, Gjersrud-Stensrud, is one of the last development zones in the Norwegian capital but is surrounded by agricultural land and woods. The masterplan, created with ecologist Christian Mong, protects these from typical Norwegian sprawl by enforcing an extensive “no-build” zone and by concentrating the low-rise housing into clusters with distinct architectures and streetscapes. The topography inspired a hierarchy of spaces from public squares and hill-top promenades to courtyards, lanes and mews. |
