Make Architects is working on its first scheme in India — a mixed-use tower in Mumbai.

The firm is working up plans for the project in India’s financial capital from its London base. It will be a mixture of office and residential for an unnamed local client.

The height is still being finalised but it is expected to be around 50 storeys.

Make’s founder Ken Shuttleworth, who scotched claims the tower could be as much as 75 storeys, admitted the practice was now looking to make wider inroads into the country.

“We will look at India as a market,” he told BD. “We’ve had a look at India before but nothing actually happened.”

Aedas, SOM and Benoy are among the firms that have bases in India, and Shuttleworth admitted Make, which has offices in the Middle East and Beijing, might have to open an office there.

“In the Far East you have to have people on the ground,” he said, “and with India we eventually might have to do the same.”
