Round 2: Farrell steps into fray over Aedas scheme
Terry Farrell has been appointed by the developer of Convoys Wharf to review Aedas’s stalled plans for the site. It is the second time in a matter of days that Farrell has been asked to criticise another architect’s work. He was called by Lambeth council to give evidence against Squire & Partners’ Vauxhall towers at a planning inquiry earlier this week. Now Hutchison Whampoa has appointed him to review Aedas’s contentious masterplan for Convoys Wharf in Deptford, a £1 billion development on one of the most historic wharves on the River Thames. Aedas was about to submit a planning application for 3,500 homes to Lewisham council late last year when local opposition forced a u-turn. One of Farrell’s first tasks will be to lead a community consultation event on March 24 to listen to the objections which include the scheme’s bulk, height and disregard for history. Willi Richards, co-founder of lobby group Deptford Is…, welcomed the news. He said: “Three things make this moment in the redevelopment of the site exciting: Sir Terry’s stated commitment to locally generated masterplanning processes; the locally generated big ideas for the historically rich site; and the resources and commitment of the owners to make something special.” A Hutchison Whampoa spokesman confirmed Aedas remained part of the wider team of conultants. He added: “We are disappointed with planning delays but recognise that we need to work with the council and local community to develop our vision for the site. Sir Terry Farrell will provide a fresh look at these issues. He will listen to and engage with local community opinion and help us to develop a masterplan that we can take through planning later this year.” |
