A £3 million revamp of Maidstone Museum in Kent by Hugh Broughton Architects has opened six years after the firm won the original RIBA competition.

The work included adding a new east wing which has been clad in gold shingles in a reference to the 600,000 artefacts on display inside.

The new wing is intended to ease congestion throughout the rest of the building and includes a shop, baby changing facilities and new gallery spaces. And display space in the existing museum, which is grade II listed, has been increased by a third following the refurbishment.
