Finalists unveiled in design Washington's National Mall
Architects and landscape architects including Snohetta, Michael Maltzan, Aecom and Diller Scofidio Renfro have been shortlisted in a design competition for Washington’s National Mall. Four shortlisted designs for each of the three sites in the heart of the US capital go on show to the public this week. They were whittled down from 32 entries. Three winners will be chosen in May. The National Mall organisation, which is trying to raise $350 million to help restore the mall, initially sought ideas for three sites within the 280ha park: Constitution Gardens, Sylvan Theatre and Union Square. The gardens or theatre will be built first, with an intended completion date of 2016. For security reasons Congress later decided to switch control of Union Square to the Architect of the Capitol and Capitol Police.
