Beware, When Choosing Black Granite
Why does black granite fade ? The answer is, black granite should not fade. Black granite imported from Asia is sometimes doctored with dyes and oils to darken the surface. The fading is nothing more than the dyes and oils being removed. Unfortunately, the only fix is to re-polish the top. This can be very costly.
Before purchasing a black granite, perform the following test to find out if it has been doctored. Take a clean white rag and apply a some acetone to the surface of the granite. If any residue or black color is observed on the top, do not accept it, it has been dyed. BLACK SPOTS ON BLACK GRANITE! BEWARE OF DARK COLORS! They Show Scratches! Although laminate is durable, scratches are inevitable because countertops typically get heavy wear. Scratches tend to be light colored, which makes them highly visible against deep colors and virtually impossible to hide. If you love a deep color, find a pattern in that color that’ll help disguise scratches. Test this yourself by taking a color chip and dragging the coarse bottom of a coffee cup across it, and then a steak knife and a pizza cutter. Check the visibility of the scratches. |
