It was founded in the 7th century and Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed in the town one night during the Jacobite Rising in 1745. That spot, a shoe shop displays a plaque on the wall. Bonnie Prince Charlie barracked his army here while he tried to take over Carlisle Castle. The site of the hanging of six of the prince's supporters has been made a monument called the Capon Tree Monument and is right outside the center of town. The tree no longer stands and was replaced by the monument. Most of the old buildings are made of red sandstone that is prevalent in the area but the others built later are made of concrete. You will find the Tourist Information Center in the center of town in an octagonal building called Moot Hall. This hall was built in 1817 and has a clock tower and stocks that stand outside the door. They haven't been used since 1863. Brampton used to be a market city and the market was in the center of town right outside the door of Moot Hall. Gelt Woods is another hiking area nearby that has a nature reserve and in the woods is a rock that has an inscription carved on it by a third century Roman Soldier. Also nearby is the Lanercost Priory that was founded by Henry II in 1166. It was finished in 1220 and stayed in operation for 370 years until Henry VIII ceased monasteries from running in 1536. The building is built of red sandstone and is hidden by woodland. It is very near the Scottish border and during the 13th and 14th centuries it was damaged by Robert the Bruce and William Wallace. The naive of the priory was restored in the 18th century in order to be used as a parish church and services are held today. If the service is at night it is only lit by candle and lamplight. Nearby on the River Irthing is a magnificent medieval bridge with two arches. You can still see the ruined cloisters, choir and transepts. Every summer the town puts on an event called Brampton Live which is a growing music festival that has taken place since 1995. Here you can hear Celtic and folk music from all over England.
