If you love the natural and old-world charm of stone and brick, you can lay a corner of lawn or garden with pavers to create a stone patio. Creating a corner area with stone pavers can give you a place for setting chairs or a picnic table, outdoor potted plants or a grill. You can also create a level, stable work and storage area. Stone pavers are easy to install and maintain.

1
Measure the corner plot where stone pavers will be installed. Make measurements that are divisible by the size of the pavers.

2
Dig out the ground where the pavers will be installed. Dig 9 inches deep. Dig approximately 9 inches past the open edges where the patio will end. For edges that are abutted against a fence or building, dig out right along the edge of the structure.

3
Rake the ground to spread out the dirt and to break up any dirt clods. Rake the ground to create as level of a surface as possible.

4
Tamp the ground with a hand tamper to flatten the soil.

5
Line the excavated bed with weed-blocking landscape fabric.

6
Fill the bed with a 5-inch layer of crushed rock. Tamp down the crushed rock to flatten and level it. Apply more gravel as needed to achieve the desired height of the surface of the patio based on the depth of the pavers. The pavers should be set in the ground, but can protrude by at least 1/2-inch. Tamp down the additional layer of gravel.

7
Fill the bed with a 1 to 1-1/2-inch layer of sand. Spread and level the sand with a 2x4. Tamp down the sand to compact and flatten it.

8
Spray the ground with water to help the gravel and sand settle. Add more sand and tamp again if necessary.

9
Begin laying the pavers in the corner and along the edge that is against a fence or building. This will ensure that you are starting with a straight line. Fit the pavers tightly together and add or remove sand as you go if necessary to keep the stones level with one another. A 2x4 and a level can be used to ensure a level surface. Keep adding rows of pavers, butting each stone next to the previous. Use a rubber mallet to tamp down the stones.

10
Insert vertical bricks or concrete curbs along any open edges. This will keep the internal bricks stable. Use a hand shovel to dig a little deeper around the edges for insertion of the edging bricks.

11
Back fill and compact behind the open edges of the patio with the previously excavated soil

12
Sprinkle and sweep sand into the cracks between each paver.

13
Spray the patio with water to clean off excess sand or dirt and to help the sand between the pavers to settle.
