Granite tile countertops are edged the same way as ceramic tile countertops. A field tile is cut to the width of the countertop's edge, then capped off by an overhanging bullnose granite tile on top. A tile with a bullnose has one of the four edges rounded over, giving it a smooth, finished look. You can't buy granite bullnose tiles; they are milled specifically for each granite tile installation. Certain companies specialize in grinding and polishing granite tile bullnose edges.

1
Measure the front facing edge of the countertop. Mark the measurement on a standard granite tile and cut it, using a tile cutting saw.

2
Hold the cut tile in place with the non-dominant hand and use a ruler to measure from the side of the granite tile already set in thinset--second row back, on the countertop to the front edge of the tile being held in place. Write down the measurement.

3
Lay a bullnose tile on a work surface and mark off the measurement, starting at the front edge of the bullnose. Add an extra 1/8 inch. This is to allow for the mortar that will be applied to the back of the tile already cut.

4
Cut the bullnose granite tile.

5
Apply modified thinset mortar for granite on the countertop, using the trowel. Comb notches through the mortar, using the notched edged of the trowel. Apply mortar to the back of the tile strip to be glued to the front facing edge. Don't notch this mortar.

6
Set the bullnose tile on the countertop, making sure it butts up tightly to any adjoining granite tiles. Granite tile installations do not have grout lines. Press the strip of tile to the edge of the countertop.

7
Seat the two tiles simultaneously in their corresponding mortar so the front edge of the bullnose tile is perfectly even with the front face of the tile strip edging the countertop. Make sure the top of the bullnose tile is equal to the height of any adjoining tiles. Repeat steps 1 through 7 to complete all edges of the countertop.
