Granite tile countertops can transform a bathroom or kitchen, taking it from boring to beautiful. Installing granite tile countertops can be expensive, due to the high cost of materials and labor. If you have a knack for home projects, you may want to consider finishing the countertops yourself to save on labor costs. With the right materials, you can polish the edges of your granite tile tops, creating a smooth finish.

1
Clean the tile countertop with a sponge and a solution of water and mild detergent. Wipe with a fresh, damp cloth and allow the tiles to dry.

2
Fit a grinder with a 50-grit pad.

3
Set the angle grinder to a speed of 2,800 rpm, as any higher setting can cause the pads to overheat.

4
Apply the pad to the top edge of the granite tile at the edge of the counter. With a light but steady pressure, work your way to the bottom edge of the tile. Work from left to right until the entire edge has been sanded.

5
Wipe the edges with a damp cloth.

6
Fit the grinder with a 100-grit pad. Repeat the polishing process until you see an even texture along the edge. Continue this process, using 200-, 400-, 800-, 1,500-, and finally, a 3,000-grit pad. This will ensure the smoothest surface. Wipe away the dust with a damp cloth.

7
Apply the tin oxide polishing compound to a buffing cloth. Using circular motions, buff the edge of the countertop. Remove all traces of the compound by wiping with a clean cloth. Allow the surface to dry.

8
Apply a sealer specifically made for granite countertops, if desired.
