Travertine tile is a durable stone that is part of the limestone family. Travertine tiles should be sealed after installation to protect the stone from dirt, stains and other damage. Even when sealed, travertine tiles still require routine cleaning to remove dirt and debris. Although travertine is a tough stone, care must be taken when cleaning and removing dirt from travertine. Certain cleaners and products may cause damage to the surface. If the right products and methods are used for cleaning sealed travertine tiles, the tiled surface will look like new and last for many years.

Dust the travertine tiles to remove loose dirt and debris. For floors, use a clean dust mop. Countertops and other travertine surfaces can be dusted with a dry rag. A soft-brush vacuum cleaner also may be used for dusting.

Fill a bucket with hot water. Dip a clean, microfiber mop or microfiber rag into the bucket. Wring it out well.

Mop or wipe down the travertine surface with the microfiber mop or cloth and hot water. Rinse the mop or rag often in the bucket of water. Replace the water as it becomes saturated with dirt.

Dry the travertine with a dry microfiber mop or dry microfiber rag. This will remove any streaks or water marks left on the floor. It is best not to let the tiles air dry as water spots may form.

Add a few drops of mild dish soap to the hot water for a deeper cleaning and if the dirt is thick. Clean as directed above. Follow up by mopping or wiping down the surface with plain water. Dry the surface completely.

Use a stone cleaner as an alternative to mild dish soap. Stone cleaners vary in how they are to be applied to the stone. Some will be diluted with water while others will be sprayed onto the surface undiluted. Follow the instructions from the cleaners' manufacturer to properly clean the travertine with the stone cleaner. The travertine will need to be dried with a dry towel or mop regardless of which stone cleaner you use.
