No one would seriously consider installing a floor or counter with tiles made of limestone because it is soft, powdery and breaks apart in an instant. Put the limestone under tremendous pressure with heat and a fine piece of marble is created. Crystals form that increase the density of the rock and each piece emerges individual in veining and coloration. Natural stone surfaces offer durability, but extra care to avoid staining is necessary. Frequent cleaning with stone-safe cleaners will prevent most stains, but polishing helps seal the surface.

Cleaning Marble Tile
1
Remove all items from tiled area. Brush or sweep up any loose dirt or debris.

2
Mix 2 oz. of non-acidic stone cleaner and 1 quart of warm water in a spray bottle. Spray it on the tile and let it sit for three to five minutes.

3
Wipe with a cloth or clean, dry mop. Let the surface dry for 12 hours.

Polishing and Sealing the Marble Tile
1
Spray the surface liberally with the marble polish. The surface needs to be visibly wet.

2
Let the marble tile dry for three to five minutes. Respray the surface until it is wet looking.

3
Wait 30 minutes and then wipe off the excess with a clean towel. Buff the surface using a terry cloth towel or rag.

4
Plug in a floor buffer and buff marble floor tiles with a soft buffing cloth. Leave the buffer on a slow to medium setting. Run the buffer back and forth over the floor until you reach a uniform shine. Floor buffers are available for rental at most rental equipment companies at a moderate daily rate.
