If you want a kitchen backsplash that will last for years, a granite backsplash provides the durability you want.  However, granite's natural anti-microbal and stain resistant qualities make it a favorite backsplash option for kitchens and bathrooms alike.

Keep It Polished
If you like the contemporary, modern look, try a polished granite backsplash. Typically made from a single sheet 4-inch thick sheet of polished granite, polished granite backsplashes are often installed with granite countertops of the same color, creating one large sweep of color from the edge of the countertop to the bottom of the top cabinets. You also have the option of installing a shorter granite backsplash of varying heights which does not reach the bottom of the cabinets, but this option tends to be less common than the full granite backsplash.

Add Tile
If you like the look of tile but prefer the durability of granite, get the best of both worlds with granite tile. Available in 12-inch square tiles, granite comes in a variety of colors. Create a simple tile wall or get creative with multiple colors of granite and make a mosaic. If you're feeling adventurous or especially handy, cut granite tiles to create a more detailed and elaborate mosaic. If you're planning to install your tile granite backsplash yourself, do your research. Granite requires sealant before it's grouted to make it possible to remove later. It is also heavy and requires special adhesive and installation procedures to keep it from separating from the wall.

Mix It Up
If you're looking for something a little different, think about mixing granite with other mediums. A natural stone, granite works well with other natural elements, such as slate, tumbled stone tiles or river rocks. For a creative take, use granite tiles to create a "framed" backsplash of tumbled rocks or other natural stones or design your own mosaic using a variety of natural materials.

If you're looking for something individualized and you have the cash, get a sheet of polished granite etched with an image or saying you love, and use it as your kitchen backsplash. Because granite is naturally stain resistant, the image stays the same for years to come, so make sure it's something you're sure to love.
