Stone is popular in interior design. It is used in stairwells and on fireplaces, accent walls and main walls. Stone walls work well with several different design plans, such as modern, industrial or country, and can be decorated just like any other wall. Whether you're starting from scratch or redecorating, incorporating a wall treatment with visual drama is a great way to make an impact in a room.
1
Hang art on the walls. This may be a traditional technique, but it doesn't have to be dull. You can also put up shelves and use the wall to display your collections of sports memorabilia, dolls or cuckoo clocks. Or use the wall to showcase your own photography, carvings, sculptures and the like. Hang funky metal pieces, interesting driftwood or authentic Mexican tiles. Or show your love of movies and classic films by hanging framed posters.
2
Put up a faux window or two. The methods for making faux windows are limited only by your imagination. Find an old multipaned window. Start with the frame. Sand it to remove old paint, then you can paint it in bold colors or carve designs into it. Dress up the glass by gluing on brightly colored paper or cardstock, photos, memorabilia, feathers, leaves or whatever you like. You can frost or paint the glass, or remove it altogether and hang trinkets, beads, colored glass or mirrors in the frame.
3
Paint a mural on the wall. You may not immediately think of painting stone, but it can be done easily---and the texture of the naturally rough stone creates depth and dimension in the mural. You can paint animals, a city skyline, a sea view, an underwater scene or whatever you like. Try your hand at painting the mural yourself; you can find instructions in books or online. You can also hire a local artist to paint it for you.
