Stone surfaces such as granite countertops or slate tile flooring are very practical and attractive interior design features. However, many people think because it's stone, it is everlasting. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Stone needs cleaning and maintenance for its natural beauty to last for years to come.

Daily Cleaning
Every day cleaning of interior stone surfaces calls for little more than a vacuum or dust mop. Be sure to use a clean, non-treated dry dust mop. Avoid using an old vacuum cleaner if its wheels or attachments are worn out, because they may scratch the stone surface or sealant. A soft, dry cloth can be used to clean non-floor stone surfaces.

Chemical
With chemical stone surface cleaners, the cleaning agent needs to be non-ionic and should have a neutral acidity pH of 7 or a pH that is as close as possible to the pH of the stone surface itself. The stone surface cleaner for marble, for example, which has a pH of around 10, should have a pH of 9 to 10.

Stone soap or mild dishwashing detergent and warm water are simple yet effective alternatives. Bleach, salt-laden cleaners or stone surface cleaners containing any strong acids or bases should never be used.
Granite
You can make your own granite cleaner with readily available ingredients. Mix 3 parts water to 1 part white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on your granite and wipe with a soft cloth or paper towel. This method will remove any greasiness and leave surfaces shiny.

Be sure to wipe the surface dry after cleaning to prevent any dullingwater calcium or lime scale deposits from building up on the surface. If the smell of vinegar is too much, rinse with plain water and wipe dry.

Poultice
A poultice is a simple stone surface stain cleaner. You can make this simple mixture of baking soda and water (or mineral spirits). Mix 1/4 cup baking soda with 1 1/2 table spoons of water to a consistency of peanut butter. Apply the poultice to the stain in a layer approximately 7mm thick and cover with plastic wrap. Leave it on the stain for up to 2 days. The poultice will actually draw the stain up from the stone. Stubborn stains may take a few repeated applications. To avoid stains, wipe up any accidental spills immediately with a paper towel.

Warning
Always check labels on the products before you apply them on your precious stonework. Test them in an inconspicuous area first to see the effect of your cleaning product.
