Soapstone is a nonporous stone commonly used for countertops, pizza stones, oven interiors and cooking pots. Soapstone is heat resistant, meaning you can place hot items--such as pots and pans--directly onto the soapstone without damaging it. Furthermore, soapstone does not stain easily, nor does it require any special chemicals to keep it clean. However, soapstone can become scratched over time. Repairing a scratch on soapstone is relatively simple, using a little elbow grease and a few household items.

1
Apply mineral oil to the area to hide light scratches.

2
Sand the scratch with 120-grit sandpaper in a circular motion until the scratch disappears.

3
Place some water on the scratch.

4
Use 220-grit sandpaper to sand the water and scratch in a circular motion.

5
Clean the area with a damp soft cloth and allow to dry.

6
Apply mineral oil to the soapstone and wipe with a microfiber cloth.
