Because slate flooring is smooth, it is relatively easy to clean. Slate itself is created from a metamorphic rock that forms in layers, creating a streaked look that is as beautiful as it is versatile. When used in homes, slate is typically applied over a grout that can be seen between the tiles. This grout area is usually the most difficult area to clean, since it forms a crevice that collects dirt, dust and debris. Fortunately, you can clean your entire slate/grout surface with commercial cleaners and without the aid of a professional.

Sweep the flooring at least every other day, using a broom. This removes debris and prevents them from caking in between the tiles.

Clean spills immediately with a warm rag or mop. Waiting can result in a gooey mess in the grout that collects dirt and grime.

Scrub grout by applying a 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Let it set for five minutes and then rub the area with a sponge. Use this same method for stubborn stains and sticky messes.

Mop your slate flooring with a mild detergent and water mixture. You can use any cleanser, but avoid strong solutions. Once finished mopping, rinse well and allow the slate to dry before replacing throw rugs.
