Stone pavers are a beautiful addition to a patio or driveway. You can construct planter boxes, garden walls or use the pavers as a decorative element along the edge of the driveway. Stone pavers can be purchased at most home improvement stores but you can also make the pavers yourself. Creating a custom paver allows you to completely control the size, shape and color. The job is time-consuming but very straightforward. You should master the technique in no time.
1
Set out your paver molds on a flat, level work surface. You can buy a paver mold online or create your own. To create your own mold, trim lumber to the correct dimensions and nail it together to create the shape you like. Brush the inside of each mold with cooking oil to keep the concrete from sticking.
2
Combine colorant with the pre-mixed concrete. You'll find ratio recommendations on the side of the colorant bottle. Add more or less colorant until you are pleased with the color.
3
Slowly pour water into the colorant and concrete mixture. Mix the concrete until it is thick like oatmeal.
4
Dip a small bucket into the concrete and pour it into the molds. Completely fill each mold. Scrape a trowel across the top of the concrete to smooth out the surface. Shake the mold with both hands to remove any air pockets.
5
Allow the mold to set up for 48 hours. Turn the mold over. Slide a putty knife into the mold and gently pry the paver loose from the mold. Shake to remove the paver completely.
6
Set the pavers outside and cover them with a plastic tarp. Allow the pavers to cure for seven days. Keep the pavers protected from animals and children.
7
Apply a thin layer of concrete sealer to the pavers with a paintbrush. Let the sealer dry completely before installing your pavers.
