Granite vanity tops are a great way to add a modern finishing touch to any bathroom design. Granite, like any natural stone, has color and veining unique to each slab, which can help make your bathroom design special. With the addition of an undermounted sink for a clean, sleek look, a granite vanity top can help keep the bathroom looking great for years to come.
Installing a granite countertop should be done by two people to ensure that it can be lifted onto the vanity without damage.
1
Clean the edge of the vanity top with a damp cloth. You will need to remove any dust or debris that could get between the bond of the counter and the vanity.
2
Carefully lift the top onto the vanity to check its fit. The counter should hang 1/2 inch over the vanity on each side and a full inch over the front of the vanity. If need be, move the vanity away from a wall, if it is sitting flush, to allow the counter to sit evenly on the vanity.
3
Run a line of clear silicone caulk around the edge of the vanity. Squeeze the tube carefully to get a continuous line of caulk with no breaks or interruptions in the line.
4
Lift the granite onto the vanity and settle it in place on the adhesive. Allow it to sit for one minute and then carefully lift the top straight up. The adhesive will come up in what appears to be strings between the counter and the vanity. Settle the vanity top back into place. The air hitting the silicone when it is strung out like this will allow it to harden faster, giving you a firmer bond between the counter and the vanity.
5
Fill any edges with clear silicone caulk where the counter meets the wall to act as an expansion joint in case of the house settling. This will prevent damage to the counter or wall over time, as well as act as a seal to prevent water from getting behind the vanity.
