Two of the most popular natural stone tile products are marble and granite. Both are widely used in kitchens, baths and commercial applications on counters, walls and floors. There are a number of advantages to consider in choosing these natural tiles over ceramic or porcelain products but a primary consideration is beauty. Natural stone provides an almost unlimited variety in the colors and patterns that can be found in the tiles, making your tiles unique to your home or building.

Durability
The durability of natural tile products has been proven by the continued existence of the stone over the centuries. Next to diamonds, granite is one of the hardest substances known. It resists cuts, scratches and scuffing and can resist heat, making the tiles ideal for countertops. Marble is a hard, durable stone that is only slightly softer than granite.

Stain Resistance
Both granite and marble are naturally porous, and liquids that are left on the surface will seep into the tiles. Marble is slightly more susceptible to staining than granite, but both can be easily protected. A regular application of sealer will prevent most stains from starting and help reduce the depth to which others can penetrate.

Flatness
Natural stone tiles are made by sawing them from larger pieces of stone. The process of cutting and polishing the tiles leaves the surface close to perfectly flat, unlike a molded ceramic tile. The stone tiles can be installed close together with a very thin grout line, making the surface appear seamless. The resulting floor or counter will be much flatter and pleasant to work or walk on.

Distinctiveness
Marble and granite are attractive decorating choices because no two pieces are exactly alike. When you work with a manufactured tile, the same pattern is repeated on each tile. Stone was created by natural forces and it developed in random colors and patterns. By arranging the tiles to take advantage of these colors and patterns, you can create just the look you want during installation.

Easy to Install
If you have any experience at all with tile work you will have no problem installing granite or marble tile. The steps for installation are exactly the same with the exception of cutting the tiles. You can’t score and snap natural stone so you will need to use a diamond saw to cut the tiles. When working with marble, a bit of additional caution is advised. Occasionally, this stone may have a tendency to crack along the veins in the tile during installation so lay it down softly.
