Slate tile is a natural stone tile that has a naturally cleft, or unevenly indented, surface that provides good traction. Since slate tile is natural stone it is very porous, and needs to be sealed to prevent staining and water absorption. Stone sealers are available in both a high gloss finish and a matte finish. Choose a sealer that best suits the decor of your kitchen or bathroom. Properly sealing your slate tile countertop adds years of life to your stone.

1
Clean the slate tile countertop of any residue by vacuuming the area. Wipe the countertop down with a soft cloth to pick up any remaining residue.

2
Place painter's tape along the edges of the countertop where the slate tile meets the wall to protect the drywall from the tile sealer.

3
Pour stone tile sealer into a flat pan or paint tray. Spread the sealer over the slate countertop using a paint roller or paintbrush. Let the stone tile sealer penetrate the tile for 30 minutes, then wipe away any excess sealer using a grout sponge.

4
Apply a second sealer coat 30 to 40 minutes after the first coat dries. After applying the second coat, wait an additional 30 minutes and wipe away any sealer residue with a damp cloth. Wait 24 to 72 hours for your countertop to be fully cured before placing any items on it.
