Marble care starts with sealing your new floor tiles or countertop with the proper sealant. Sealers protect the porous stone against dirt, spills and stains.

1
Topical Sealers. These are generally water based solutions that form a thin film over the marble to help to protect it from stains and scratches. Generally, topical sealers are used more for floors than counter tops and they may slightly alter the color or appearance of the marble. The sealant will build up over time with multiple applications.

2
Impregnators. These are also water based but these are designed to penetrate beneath the surface. The major advantage of using an impregnator sealant is that they repel many of the common drinks that may stain like coffee, tea, soda and juice but they also breathe to allow moisture out of the stone which will help to keep it from warping. This type of sealant is generally a little more expensive but also tends to need less reapplication.

3
Sealers can be purchased at a local natural stone store that offers tiles or slab stone. You can also visit your local hardware store or search online.

4
Apply sealant as directed on the product that you have purchased. That product will also offer a timeline as to how often it would need to be reapplied. In the case of Impregnators, you may need to be sure that the house is opened up because the vapors tend to be strong and could be noxious if there is no circulation.
