Marble sinks come in contact with a wider variety of soils and substances than your typical marble surface. Accordingly, they require more care than a countertop, floor or wall. Anything used to clean a marble surface should be of a neutral pH (pH of 7). Most bathroom cleaners are not pH 7 balanced and can degrade and stain a marble surface. The proper stone cleaners can be found at most hardware stores and tile supply shops. Properly caring for marble sinks involves a cycle of sealing, cleaning and refinishing. Sealing, with a penetrating sealer, should be done when the sink is initially installed and every year thereafter. The sink should be cleaned with a stone cleaner at least once a week. Refinishing, with a marble refinishing compound, is necessary when the finish on the sink begins to dull, streak or is scratched.
Sealing the Sink
1
Pour the sealer into the spray bottle if it does not already come in a spray bottle.
2
Clean the surface of any dust or debris. The surface must be completely dry for 12 hours before sealing.
3
Test sealer on a small, inconspicuous area and check to make sure that it does not stain the surface. If it does, consult the manufacturer or retailer.
4
From a distance of about six to eight inches, spray the sealer liberally on the surface of the marble until it is wet.
5
Wait three to five minutes for the marble to begin to dry. Again liberally spray the surface with the sealer.
6
Wait 30 minutes.
7
Wipe up excess sealer that has pooled on the surface with the sponge.
8
Allow 48 hours before allowing the surface to get wet again.
9
Reseal once a year.
Cleaning the Surface
1
Pour the stone cleaner into the spray bottle if it does not already come in a spray bottle.
2
Clean the surface of any dust or debris.
3
Spray the stone cleaner liberally on the surface of the sink.
4
Wipe the cleaner off with a clean, damp sponge.
5
Repeat if necessary.
Refinishing the Marble
1
Clean the sink with a stone cleaner.
2
Lightly mist the surface of the marble with a spray bottle filled with cold water.
3
Place a dime-sized dollop of refinishing compound on the sink.
4
Buff the compound into the sink until you get the desired appearance. One dime-sized drop will refinish about one square foot.
5
Repeat across the surface of the sink.
6
Clean the sink with stone cleaner as outlined in Section 2.
