Marble floors are highly susceptible to unsightly hard water staining, due to their smooth mineral surface and bright appearance. In addition, marble floors receive excessive exposure to water, from a combination of spills, routine cleaning, overflow from bathtubs and showers (in the case of bathroom floors) and other moisture. When you notice water stains on your marble floor, you can clean up the problem with minimal effort if you know the proper way to clean marble.

1
Fill your sink with hot water. If treating a very small stain, apply the hot water to a soft, nonabrasive cloth. If treating a large area of water stains, apply the water to a soft terry cloth or microfiber cloth.

2
Scrub your floor using only hot water and your wet cloth or mop. Even slightly acidic cleaning products can damage the surface of your marble, so avoid using commercial cleaning products, vinegar, bleach or any other alkali.

3
Buff the marble by rapidly rubbing the surface with a dry, soft cloth. Dry the marble as much as possible to prevent new water stains from forming. Never use steel wool, scouring pads or other abrasive products, as these will scratch your marble.

4
Squeeze a dab of mild soap onto your wet wash cloth if hot water alone fails to remove the stain. Mild soap and hot water, used in moderation, will not damage your marble tiles, but frequent use can dull the marble, according to Countertop Specialty, so only use it as needed.

Buff the marble with a dry cloth.
