Granite countertops add beauty to any place they are installed. Whether it's a bar on the back deck, part of a kitchen make-over or the master bath, few things say elegance like granite. Of course, to give your rooms extra appeal, you will want to use granite that compliments the use and feel of the room. When you make the choice to install granite, keep these tips in mind.

When purchasing granite, don't go to a small distributer. Find a granite supplier that is well-established and has a large selection of granite slabs from which to choose. Take along as many of the following items as possible:

  • A sample of the floor covering
  • A few pieces of the tile backsplash
  • A cabinet door or drawer
  • A paint sample
  • Window coverings or a fabric swatch
  • Cabinet hardware

You may want to draw out your room's layout noting where the granite countertops would be as well as have the measurements and shape(s) the slabs will be. Also, if you are building a home, it helps to know what color your appliances will be before making your granite countertop selection.

When you get to the granite suppliers, lay out the items you brought against the slabs to get an idea of how it will look in your home. If possible, ask to see the granite samples in natural light so you can get a better understanding of how lighting will play on the stone's movement.

Once you have chosen something you like, ask to see a few larger slabs. It is not uncommon for the sample to vary from the actual slab due to the veining which brings granite's desirable beauty and movement.
